4 Trends That Are Shaping The Future Of The Public Cloud

A public cloud is an IT model that enables the management of on-demand computing services and infrastructure by a third-party provider. These services are then shared with several organizations via the public internet. This makes computing resources easily accessible to anyone for purchase.

Four primary trends are driving the growth of the public cloud industry. The public cloud industry is expected to witness 21.7 percent growth between 2021 and 2022.

Let us explore these trends and understand how they will impact your organization.

These new trends in cloud computing are continuing to expand the variety of cloud offerings and capabilities, enabling accelerated growth across all segments in the public cloud services industry. Research from Gartner predicts that the public cloud industry will expand massively over the next few years, accounting for more than 45 percent of all enterprise IT spending by 2026.

Cloud ubiquity

Today, the cloud lies at the heart of most major technological disruptions and has proven to be resilient, scalable, flexible, and fast. Hybrid multi-cloud and edge environments are growing rapidly, making way for new distributed cloud models.

New advances in wireless communications like 5G R16 and R17 will propel cloud adoption to uncharted levels of broader and deeper usage. Several new use cases like enhanced mobile banking, healthcare transformation will also emerge.

Regional cloud ecosystems

Gartner sees cloud infrastructure and platform services (CIPS) as another major trend that will redefine the public cloud.

Geo-political regulations and industry compliance are driving the establishment of new regional and vertical cloud ecosystems and data services. The regions that are unable to create or sustain their cloud ecosystems will be compelled to leverage the capabilities of platforms created in other regions. This will necessitate legislation and regulation to maintain control.

Gartner expects wider adoption of fully managed and AI/ML-enabled cloud services from CIPS providers that will remove the operational burden of traditional infrastructure and operations (I&O) roles in the public cloud.

Sustainability and carbon-intelligent cloud

Gartner’s research suggests that nearly half of CEOs believe climate change mitigation will have a significant impact on business. Thus, cloud solution providers are responding to the increasing focus on sustainability by enforcing aggressive carbon-neutral corporate goals, which create new challenges for I&O leaders.

Modernization of data centers

The private cloud will not be left behind. Data centers will modernize rapidly and continue to play a pivotal role in cloud services. Analysts at Forrester understand the key importance of the public cloud but reveal that the present distinction between edge, public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid will gradually disappear.
